Dish Towel Tote Tutorial

I love the dollar section at Target...I can always find something that I "need" in those bins. At the beginning of this month they started putting out some Valentine's things. They had dishtowel sets, 2 in a set, for $2.50. I bought several sets and I decided to try to make a tote out of a couple of them. Here is a tutorial on how I did it. It took me maybe 2 hours total.

What you need:
2- decorative dish towels
something for lining (I used an old pillow case)
thread
sewing machine
scissors
iron

Here is my dish towels and lining (pillow case).  

I washed all my material and then ironed them all.

 I folded a dish towel in half with the design on the inside.  

Then sewed a single stitch up each side from the fold to the top. 

Leave the top open as that will be the opening to your tote.

 Then I laid out my pillow case and measured and cut to the size 

of my dish towel, which I had turned design side out. 

Since I was using a pillow case I only had to sew up one side and 

I did this with it turned inside out.  

Next I took the 2nd dish towel and cut 2, 3-inch strips down the length of the towel.  

Then I folded them in half with the design on the inside 

and sewed a single stitch up the cut edges.
I did this to both of the strips.

Then I used a pencil to turn them outside-in,
where the design is on the outside.

I ironed both straps with seam on side.

Then I took my pillow case (lining), still turned inside-out, 

and put it inside the dishtowel.  I made sure that the bottom 

of the lining reached the bottom and the amount showing 

at the top is how much was left sticking out.

So then I folded the extra down until it was just a little
shorter than the dishtowel edge. The fold needs to go
in between the dishtowel and the lining.

This picture is a little bright, sorry about that.  I don't know if you
can tell,but what I did next is start to sew the lining and the
dish towel together making sure that straps were 4" from the
seam of the dish towel. The strap goes between the lining and the dish towel.

I made sure that I had the straps spaced evenly on both 

sides and that they were both the same length.  

Then finished stitching all the way around.

After snipping all the thread ends, it was done!  

I think it turned out cute!  For under $5, it's a winner.
